Pediatric Root Canal (Pulp Therapy)
Gentle Tooth-Saving Treatment for Kids at ABC Kids Dental Group

At ABC Kids Dental Group, our mission is to protect growing smiles — even when a baby tooth is damaged or infected. When possible, we aim to save baby teeth rather than remove them early, because they play a vital role in your child’s oral health and development.
That’s why we offer pediatric root canal therapy, also known as pulp therapy or a baby root canal, at all of our locations in Granada Hills, Pacoima, Sun Valley, San Fernando, and Reseda, proudly serving surrounding communities like Burbank, Northridge, Panorama City, and North Hills.

Why Save Baby Teeth?

Even though baby teeth fall out eventually, they are important for:

  • 🗣️ Speech development
  • 🍽️ Chewing and nutrition
  • 🧭 Guiding adult teeth into correct position
  • 😊 Supporting your child’s confidence
If a baby tooth becomes severely decayed, infected, or damaged, a root canal may be the best way to preserve it pain-free until it’s time to fall out naturally.
What Is a Pediatric Root Canal?

A pediatric root canal (pulp therapy) is a safe, tooth-saving procedure that involves:

  • 1️⃣ Removing infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside the tooth
  • 2️⃣ Cleaning and disinfecting the space
  • 3️⃣ Sealing it with a biocompatible material
  • 4️⃣ Placing a protective white crown to restore the tooth’s strength and function
Unlike adult root canals, children typically receive a pulpotomy — a faster, less invasive version designed for growing mouths.
When Might My Child Need One?

Your child may need a root canal if they’re experiencing:

  • 😖 Ongoing tooth pain or night-time sensitivity
  • 🥶 Pain from hot/cold foods
  • 🦠 Swelling near the tooth or gumline
  • 💥 Cracked or broken baby teeth
  • 🦷 Deep decay that reaches the tooth pulp
By treating the problem early, we can prevent the need for extraction and preserve your child’s oral structure.
What’s a Pulpotomy?

A pulpotomy is the pediatric version of a root canal — and it’s well-tolerated by most children. Here’s what happens:

  • ✅ Only the upper pulp (inside the crown) is removed
  • ✅ The root pulp is left intact unless infected
  • ✅ We use gentle sedation like nitrous oxide or IV sedation if needed
  • ✅ A white, tooth-colored crown is placed afterward
This allows your child’s tooth to remain functional and intact — keeping their smile healthy and complete.
Will the Crown Affect Future Adult Teeth?

Not at all! The materials we use are 100% biocompatible and safe. When your child’s permanent tooth is ready to erupt, the crowned baby tooth will naturally loosen and fall out — just like any other.

Will It Hurt?

We understand your concerns — but rest assured, pulp therapy is not painful:

  • 🔹 We numb the area with local anesthesia
  • 🔹 Gentle sedation options are available
  • 🔹 Most children feel only mild tenderness or gum irritation after
Any discomfort fades within a few days. Our team will guide you through gentle care instructions to support healing.
